Your Only Competition Is Yesterday’s You

Jordan B. Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life blends psychology, philosophy, and practical wisdom into twelve guiding principles for building a meaningful, responsibility-driven life. Drawing on clinical experience, mythology, history, and science, Peterson challenges readers to take ownership of their choices, confront personal flaws, and live with intentional moral clarity. These rules are not quick fixes, but deep calls to grow in character, discipline, and purpose.

One of the most freeing of these, Rule 4, offers a powerful reminder: Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today. In a world where success is constantly measured by how we stack up against others, it’s easy to feel like we’re falling short. But the truth is, your path is uniquely your own — no one else is running your race. As Peterson writes,

“Finally, you may come to realize that the specifics of the games you are playing are so unique to you, so individual, that comparison to others is simply inappropriate. Perhaps you are overvaluing what you don’t have and undervaluing what you do. There is some real utility in gratitude. It’s also good protection against the dangers of victimhood.”

When we stop chasing someone else’s finish line, we can focus on the only real competition — the person we were yesterday. Gratitude grounds us, helping us recognize the value in what we already have while keeping us open to growth. Instead of being drained by comparison, we can be fueled by progress.

The question is simple but powerful: Am I making better choices today than I did yesterday? Progress is personal, and your purpose is not about beating others. Instead, it’s about becoming the most focused, faithful, and purposeful version of yourself.
